Ontario Power Generation

2023 - Present

I joined OPG as a Senior Manager, and inherited a team of two Data Scientists working on AI/ML projects. I also took over the role of practice lead for AI/ML. I grew the team up to ~20 people, and helped grow the web development team working on AI-enabled applications up to ~10 people. Our two teams are together responsible for delivering value-enabling AI-powered applications and services to various lines of business within OPG, including some OPG-wide projects.

After 7 months of working at OPG, I inherited the Data Engineering team (~20 people) as well as the role of practice lead for Data Engineering. This team maintains the data platform and builds the data pipelines that are the foundation for much of AI/ML, analytics, decision support, and business intelligence.

Shopify

2013 - 2021

I joined Shopify in the very early days, and stayed there for over 8 years until it was a company of about 10k employees. I was a part of many Data Science teams, including risk & security, partners & platform, enterprise sales, and the IPO / Finance team.

For the last 5 years of my tenure, I worked as a people lead who grew the Customer Support DS team from scratch up to about 15 employees and three sub-teams, serving about 2000 employees. I also worked as a Staff Data Scientist on a small team of experts that was tasked with setting the standards and best practises of the next phase of Data Warehousing at Shopify.

In addition to being involved in a vast scope of projects, I directly led the pioneering of many technologies and processes at Shopify, including:

  • risk detection and handling system,

  • stream data processing,

  • data governance, and;

  • data annotation in support of training ML / AI models.

Health Canada

2012 - 2013

While a student at Health Canada, I was responsible for building a transformation pipeline that converted proprietary sensor data into an open format that could be used by epidemiologists. I was also responsible for doing preliminary research in support of ongoing population health studies.

Freelance / Consulting

2021 - 2023

I worked on projects involving data engineering, machine learning / artificial intelligence, general data science consulting, and data science management consulting. I also did web development work in support of projects where the primary focus is on ML / AI.
